In 1682 William Moulton II left the family farm in Hampton, New Hampshire and settled near the Merrimac River in a section of Newbury, Massachusetts that would later become Newburyport. In 1690, William became the first to attempt silversmithing in Newbury, thus gaining the title of the first silversmith in the area and beginning a long lineage of silver craftsmen. Six consecutive generations of Moulton silversmiths have followed under the Towle Silversmiths name.
The Moulton/Towle tradition of silversmithing is still carried on today. A company whose heritage spans a time period longer than that of the United States, Towle Silversmiths remains a leader in the silver industry. Dating back to 1690, its history is rich, impeccable, and established. This remarkable heritage is reflected in the outstanding character, magnificent detail, and incredible balance of every piece bearing the Towle name. The patterns found on this website are a proud representation of the high standards and extraordinary silversmithing abilities that have come to define Towle Silversmiths.
